Referred patients will always require substantive coordination between our medical staff and that of the referring veterinarian. This ensures a full and comprehensive sharing of pertinent information that is relevant not only to the patient’s condition and treatment, but also to important follow-up care that must occur with the referring veterinarian.
For most cases, a member of our medical team calls the referring veterinarian’s office each morning with case updates. Upon discharge, we fax, email or mail a referral report (depending on the preference of the referring veterinarian) as well as make available a full copy of the medical record.
Both during hospitalization and following discharge, our doctors are available to speak with referring veterinarians by phone to discuss cases in detail.
Prior to going home, clients receive detailed discharge instructions. We will make every effort to partner with the primary care veterinarian to provide continuity of care.
Saint Francis Veterinary Center is not equipped or staffed to offer wellness or primary care services, and therefore coordination and communication between our hospital and the referring veterinarian is important in order to ensure proper follow up and continued care outside of our hospital.
