Saint Francis Veterinary Center Issues Pet Safety Warning Following Vinyl Chloride Spill in Paulsboro, N.J.
GLOUCESTER COUNTY, N.J. (November 30, 2012) – Saint Francis Veterinary Center, an award-winning, American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)-accredited specialty referral practice for animals, has issued a pet safety warning for animals in the Gloucester County, New Jersey area, following the vinyl chloride spill this morning in Paulsboro, New Jersey.
A colorless organic gas with a sweet odor, acute exposure to high levels of vinyl chloride in humans when inhaled can cause Central Nervous System signs such as dizziness, drowsiness, headaches and giddiness. It can also be irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. Acute exposure can also cause Central Nervous System signs in animals as well, including:
- Ataxia, or a lack of muscle coordination during voluntary movements
- Respiratory depression
- Abdominal pain
- Cardiac arrhythmias
“During an episode of acute exposure, such as the current spill in Paulsboro, New Jersey, we urge pet owners to follow the same recommendations that are being made for humans,” said Karyn Collier, DVM, Chief Medical Officer of Saint Francis Veterinary Center. “If you live in the affected area, make sure to keep pets indoors. If there are outdoor water sources for pets, they should be emptied and cleaned, and adhere to the same recommendations as humans for drinking water. If it is safe for people to drink, it is safe for pets to drink.”
