Department Spotlight: Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology at Saint Francis is led by Robert L. Peiffer, DVM, PhD, DACVO, who has three decades experience both in academia and in private practice.  Dr. Martha Low is our Resident in Ophthalmology.

The Ophthalmology service at Saint Francis offers comprehensive in-house diagnostic capabilities:

  • Cytology
  • Orbital and ocular ultrasonography including high-frequency ultrasound of the anterior segment
  • Electroretinography

Therapeutic modalities include:

  • Phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation for cataracts
  • Intraorbital and intraocular prosthetics
  • Endocyclophotocoagulation, cyclocryoablation, and gonioimplantatioon for glaucoma
  • Cryo- and pneumatic retinopexy

Dr. Peiffer, who has more than 200 published works including co-authorship of four textbooks, has held positions during his career as:
